From Devastation to a Dream, How Pahadi House Was Born

The Catalyst, 2013

In June 2013, the Kedarnath floods devastated Uttarakhand. Abhay Sharma from Neelkanth, Pauri Garhwal, and Yash Bhandari from Akhodi, Tehri Garhwal, both running a rafting resort in Rishikesh, lost everything. Their livelihood, their infrastructure, their plans.

The Insight

But the floods revealed a deeper wound they had always known. The steady exodus of mountain families to the plains. Villages across Garhwal were emptying. Traditional stone and mud homes, built by generations, sat abandoned. A way of life was disappearing.

The Idea, 2014

What if those abandoned homes could live again? What if tourism could be the reason people stayed in the mountains instead of leaving? Abhay and Yash began leasing dilapidated homes in Chopdiyal village near Kanatal and painstakingly restoring them, preserving the traditional architecture while making them welcoming for guests.

The Result, Today

What began as a single restored home is now Pahadi House, a conscious hospitality brand with multiple locations across Uttarakhand, from the peaks of George Everest in Mussoorie to the banks of the Ganga in Rishikesh. Every stay still follows the same principle: employ local, source local, live local.

THE PAHADI WAY

Living in Alignment With the Mountains

Every stay, every meal, every trail at Pahadi House is shaped by a single belief — the mountains have their own rhythm, and the best experiences come when we align with it. Our philosophy draws from generations of pahadi wisdom, distilled into three guiding principles.

Simplicity

Live with less, feel more. Our stays strip away the noise of city life — stone walls, wood fire, starlit skies. No excess, just what matters.

Sustainability

Tread lightly on the land. From locally sourced pahadi meals to restored mud-and-stone homes, every choice honours the mountains that host us.

Soulful Presence

Be here, fully. No rush, no itinerary pressure. Wake with the birds, walk the forest trails, sit with a cup of chai as the valley fills with mist.

“The best staff you’ll get anywhere. Extremely hospitable and took great care of us. My only feedback is — the approach road is difficult to find, have more sign boards and probably appoint someone from the staff to come to the main road to guide guests.”

Where the Mountains Speak

“We came for a weekend but the mountains asked us to stay longer. The George Everest trek at sunrise, the Doon Valley lit up at night, and the complete silence — this place reminds you what matters.”
