The house is at Pangrari, five km from Mukteshwar temple, past the government hospital on the Pokhari Gehna road. Rooms are panelled in pine and hold their heat, which counts here from October onwards. Outside there is a farm, fruit trees, a kitchen garden and a drop down to the valley, and most of what arrives at the table has come off that ground the same morning.

The family lives here. Nitesh runs it, and guests name him in their reviews more often than they describe the rooms.

Drive from Delhi through Rampur and Haldwani to Kathgodam, then up by Bhowali and Bhimtal to Mukteshwar, and carry on past the government hospital onto the Pokhari Gehna road. By train, get off at Kathgodam and take a taxi for the last two and a half hours. The last few km are narrow but tarred. Send your arrival time and Nitesh will guide your driver in.

Why Pangrari rather than the Bhowali road

Most Mukteshwar accommodation is strung along the approach road. That is convenient, and it also means the view from your window is somebody else’s property. Pangrari is a village five km out past the government hospital, with terraced fields and forest around it. The temple and Chauli Ki Jali are fifteen minutes by car when you want the view and the crowd. The rest of the time the loudest thing is the birds.
