Pudina Khet Nature Reserve forest trail

A reserve rooted in harmony with the hills

Pudina Khet is a privately owned nature reserve in the quiet village of Saskhet, just above Hathipaon. Owned and managed by Abhay Nautiyal, it is more than a walk in the woods — it is a working model of what responsible mountain living can look like, built around organic farming, aromatic and medicinal plants, and the protection of local biodiversity.

The reserve sits at roughly 2,000 metres, folded into dense oak and rhododendron forest with the whole Doon Valley opening up in the distance. The pace is slow, the air is clean, and the focus is on noticing — the smell of a crushed pudina leaf, the call of a laughing thrush, the way morning mist lifts off the ridges below.

Pudina Khet is a short drive from Pahadi House. We handle the pick-up, introduce you to Abhay or one of the resident naturalists from nearby villages, and give you an unhurried half-day away from the crowded Mussoorie trail. Numbers are kept small by design, so advance booking is essential.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns and runs Pudina Khet?
The reserve is privately owned and managed by Abhay Nautiyal, who has developed it over the years as a model for sustainable living, organic farming and biodiversity conservation in the Hathipaon hills.
How is this different from other Mussoorie walks?
Pudina Khet is off the standard tourist trail. It is small, quiet, privately cared for, and built around eco-conscious living — part working farm, part forest, part classroom. You meet the people behind the project, not just a ticket counter.
Is the walk suitable for children and older guests?
Yes. The terraced sections are gentle and the forest trail can be shortened on request. We recommend it from age 6 and upwards, and older guests comfortable with light hill walking will enjoy it fully.
Can we visit without staying at Pahadi House?
Yes — we can arrange a day-visit with transfer and guided walk. Just message us with your dates and group size and we’ll confirm availability with the reserve.
When is the best time to come?
September to November — post-monsoon greens, crisp air and clear Doon Valley views — is spectacular. March to early June is also lovely for herbs, flowers and birdsong. We avoid heavy-rain weeks in July and August.
