Six rooms above the fields at Sunkiya, a two hundred metre walk in from the road, 5.0 from 64 Google reviews
You park on the road and walk the last two hundred metres. The family tells you that before anything else, and it is also why the place is as quiet as it is. The path drops through fruit trees and vegetable beds, and then the house is there on its terrace with the valley open in front.
Six rooms, a wooden verandah running along the front of them, a common room for meals, and the fields dropping away below. It is at Sunkiya, about five km from Mukteshwar temple. Close enough to drive in for the view, far enough that none of the town reaches you.
Sixty four people have reviewed it on Google and every one of them gave it five. What they write about is the family, Nandan and Dinesh and Vijay, the food, and the fact that it does not feel like a transaction. At Rs 1,200 for a room it is also the least expensive stay on the Pahadi House list.

Sunkiya is a slope of fruit trees and fields with a few houses on it. Most of what there is to do here is walking, and the drives that people come to Mukteshwar for are all inside half an hour.
Drive from Delhi through Rampur and Haldwani to Kathgodam, then up by Bhowali and Bhimtal towards Mukteshwar and turn off for Sunkiya. By train, Kathgodam is the railhead and it is about two and a half hours by taxi from there. The road brings you to the parking and the last two hundred metres are on foot down a path through the trees, so pack accordingly and tell the family your arrival time. Somebody will come up to meet you.
Rooms in Mukteshwar start around Rs 3,000 and climb fast. Ghughuti at Sunkiya starts at Rs 1,200. At that price there is normally a catch, and here the catch is a two hundred metre walk from the car and a village house rather than a hotel. The rooms, the food and the view are not where they saved the money. Sixty four reviews on Google, every one of them five stars.
The house sits on a terrace above the fields, five km from Mukteshwar temple and about three and a half km short of Sunkiya village. Six rooms with attached bathrooms, a wooden verandah along the front, a common room, a small cafe, and apple and plum trees on the slope below. The family lives here and cooks what you eat.
You leave the car at the road. The path goes down through the trees and the vegetable beds and takes a few minutes. Coming out it is uphill, worth knowing if you are carrying a heavy bag or travelling with someone elderly. What you get for it is a house that nothing drives past.
Google shows a business centre and a fitness centre against this property. Neither exists. The tags come from the category Google filed it under rather than anything the family has claimed, and turning up at a six room village homestay expecting a gym would ruin an afternoon. What is actually here is Wi-Fi, parking at the road, hot water, a cafe and a bonfire.
Ghughuti Homestay is a partner homestay on the Pahadi House list, not a property we run. The enquiry goes straight to Nandan and the family, so you are talking to the people who will host you. If you run a homestay in the hills and want to be on this list, it is free to register.
To check dates, message the family at +91 75358 35905.
Send your dates on WhatsApp and the family will confirm a room and tell you where to leave the car.
