Search “Rajaji National Park forest rest house” and you mostly find two things: the government FRH bookings inside the reserve, which are basic and hard to get, and a handful of generic hotels in Haridwar. Ours is four acres of sal forest in the Manikut valley, built low and quiet with stone, mud and driftwood so it sits inside the landscape rather than on top of it. From your tent you hear the forest — birds at dawn, the stream, the odd langur in the canopy. Tents and what they cost

Six luxury tents, each about 200 sq ft, with spring mattresses, fine linen, charging points and a private wash area. The tariff is per adult and includes all meals.

• Per adult — ₹4,700 / night (children 6–12 ₹2,000, under 5 free, 12+ as adults): tent, breakfast, lunch and dinner, welcome drinks, evening bonfire and all the games and activities on the property.
• Children 5–12 — ₹2,000 / night; under-5s stay free. A single tent comfortably holds a family of four.

Wildlife, birds and the Rajaji safari

Rajaji Tiger Reserve runs along the Shivalik foothills where the Ganga leaves the mountains, and it is one of the best places in north India for elephants, with leopard, sambar, chital, and the occasional tiger moving through. On the property itself we count more than forty species of birds — kingfishers, barbets, woodpeckers, hornbills in season. We arrange jeep safaris into the nearest ranges with registered operators and permits; mornings are best. Bring binoculars and the birdwatching starts before you’ve finished your first chai.

Food from the forest kitchen

Meals are simple, local and cooked the old way — wood-fired clay and iron vessels, served in copper, with vegetables and herbs from the kitchen garden or the villages nearby. Three meals a day are part of the tariff, plus welcome drinks and bonfire snacks. Tell us about any dietary needs a day ahead and the kitchen will plan around them.

Wellness, bonfire and slow days

This is a place to do less. Mornings can start with yoga or meditation on the lawn; on request we arrange Ayurveda and sound-healing sessions. Days drift between the hammock, the ponds, lawn games and the forest trails. Evenings end at the bonfire under some of the darkest skies you’ll find this close to Rishikesh — good for stargazing once the fire dies down.

Best time to visit Rajaji

• October to March — peak. Cool, clear and the open safari season, since the reserve runs mid-November to mid-June. Best for wildlife, birds and bonfire nights.
• April to June — warm afternoons, lovely forest evenings, fewer crowds. Wildlife gathers near water, so sightings can be excellent.
• Monsoon (mid-June to mid-September) — the reserve usually closes and the forest turns deep green. The retreat stays open and is at its quietest; good for a slow, rainy-season escape rather than safaris.

Getting here from Delhi, Haridwar or Rishikesh

The retreat is in the Manikut valley on the edge of Rajaji, roughly 30 km from Rishikesh, 25 km from Haridwar and about 30 km from Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun. From Delhi it’s a six-hour drive of around 230 km. The last stretch is a forest road, so we’ll guide your driver in or send a vehicle from Haridwar, Rishikesh or the airport if you’d rather be picked up.
