Warm bonfire on the Pahadi House deck under a starry Himalayan night sky

Stargazing & Bonfire Night

Mussoorie’s thin mountain air and low light pollution give up a night sky most city visitors have only seen in paintings. Add a cracking wood fire, warm chai, and the Pahadi House deck.

A sky you forgot existed

Step out of the cottage after dinner on a clear winter night and the Milky Way sprawls across the sky like a river. You can see Orion’s belt without squinting, spot Jupiter and Saturn to the naked eye, and — on a new-moon night — the entire galactic band runs from south to north.

Our stargazing night is designed to be easy. There’s no long walk, no early wake-up, no complicated gear. You’ll sit by a wood-fire in our deck fire-pit with blankets and chai, while we set up a Celestron telescope nearby. Whenever something interesting swings overhead, we’ll call you over.

A local astronomer guide runs the evening — pointing out constellations, sharing the Garhwali names for the same stars, and explaining what you’re actually looking at when you peer into Jupiter’s moons. The whole thing is unhurried and conversational.

Your night under the sky

6:30 PM

Bonfire lit

The fire-pit comes alive. Settle in around it — story time with our guide begins.

7:15 PM

Constellation tour

Guide walks you through what’s visible tonight — Orion, Cassiopeia, the winter triangle. Laser pointer makes it easy to follow.

7:45 PM

Telescope viewing

One by one, take a turn at the Celestron. Tonight’s targets might include Jupiter’s moons, the Orion nebula, the Pleiades cluster.

8:30 PM

Snacks & story

Hot pakoras, roasted peanuts and Kumaoni folk tales about the stars, told under them.

9:00 PM

Wind down

Fire stays lit as long as you want. Most guests linger an extra hour just watching the embers.

Good to know

A few simple guidelines to get the most from your day.

✓ Good to do

  • Dress warmly — nights drop near freezing in Dec–Feb
  • Bring a headlamp with a red-light mode if you have one
  • Step away from the fire before looking up — eyes need to dark-adapt
  • Ask lots of questions — our guide loves curious guests
  • Let the fire staff top up the wood; don’t add your own

✗ Please avoid

  • No flash photography — ruins dark-adapted vision
  • Don’t shine white-light torches across the group
  • Never touch the telescope eyepiece with bare fingers
  • Keep young children within arm’s reach of the fire
  • Avoid scented perfume — it attracts insects even in winter

Frequently asked questions

What if it’s cloudy?
We’ll check forecasts the morning of your booking and reschedule if skies look solid cloud. On partial cloud nights we still run the evening — patches of clear sky are often spectacular.
Do you supply warm clothing?
We provide blankets and hot drinks, but please bring your own jacket, gloves and a wool cap for winter evenings. Temperatures can touch 2°C on the deck in January.
Is there a telescope for every guest?
There’s one shared high-quality Celestron and a pair of astronomer binoculars. Groups take turns — everyone gets multiple views of each target.
Can kids join?
Absolutely. Many kids are our most enthusiastic guests. Fire-pit has a safety perimeter and our team keeps an eye on little ones.
