Day Hikes & Forest Trails — pine and oak trails near Mussoorie

Day Hikes & Forest Trails

Walk through Landour’s deodar forests, Mussoorie’s hidden ridges, and the old British-era paths that once carried writers, botanists, and mountaineers.
Forest trail winding through Himalayan pine and oak

Old paths, deep forest, big views

The forests above Mussoorie are a living museum — deodar, oak and rhododendron corridors carved out by shepherds, pilgrims and colonial-era surveyors. From Pahadi House we’ll take you onto the same quiet trails that Ruskin Bond has written about for six decades, with none of the crowds of the Mall Road.

Every hike is led by a local guide who grew up walking these ridges. You’ll learn the names of the birds overhead, the stories behind abandoned British cottages, and where to find the best chai brewed over a wood fire. We keep groups small and the pace gentle — this is a walk, not a race.

Pick from four curated routes depending on how much you want to push. Easy loops suit first-timers and families; the longer ridge walks reward you with clear-day views of Bandarpunch and the Gangotri range.

Choose your trail

Four hand-picked routes, from gentle loops to ridge-line ramblers. Each can be combined with a packed forest breakfast.

01

Landour Loop

A 5 km circle through colonial-era bungalows, Char Dukan chai stalls and whispering deodar groves. Gentle gradient, ideal for families and first-time walkers.

02

George Everest Trail

03

Cloud’s End Forest

Follow a mossy old British cart track to Mussoorie’s westernmost point. Dense oak forest, wild langurs and a century-old forest rest house at the end.

04

Camel’s Back Road

A shaded 3 km walk past a curious rock formation that looks exactly like its name. Suits everyone — kids, grandparents, photographers and pensive wanderers.

Good to know before you walk

A few simple guidelines to get the most from your day.

✓ Good to do

  • Wear closed-toe shoes with grip — trails can be root-laced
  • Carry a light rain layer, weather flips fast in the hills
  • Stay with the group and on marked paths
  • Tell your guide about any injury or slow pace early
  • Carry back any wrappers or waste you bring in

✗ Please avoid

  • Don’t feed or chase langurs and forest birds
  • Avoid loud speakers or music on the trail
  • No short-cuts off the guide’s route — slope is steep
  • Don’t pluck plants or flowers, even for photos
  • Skip the hike if you have severe knee trouble

Frequently asked questions

Are the trails suitable for kids?
Yes — the Landour Loop and Camel’s Back are easy and fun for children from 8 upwards. For families with very young kids we suggest the shorter 2-hour loop.
What do I need to bring?
Comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, sunscreen, a cap and a light warm layer. Everything else — poles, first-aid, snacks — is provided by us.
Can we hike in the monsoon?
We pause most routes in July and August because paths get slippery and leeches are active. September onwards the forest is at its greenest and the hiking is beautiful.
Do I need to be very fit?
No. These are walks, not climbs. Our easy routes suit anyone who can walk 5 km on level ground. The moderate ones involve some uphill sections but we take plenty of breaks.
